Movie Of The Week: Joe's Apartment

This is one of the reasons I started the Movie Of The Week segment. To remember films I loved that I've let slip from my mind. Joe's Apartment it definitely a love it or hate it film. Back when I used to watch MTV and all of it's crazy shows, and the one that started most of them, Liquid Television. Joe's Apartment is based on a short of the same name that used to air between shows. The short was cute but I never thought to much of it. Here, watch it:



Not much to it but that lead to MTV's first movie. It's a comedy, musical with singing cockroaches. I enjoyed the shit out of this movie as a kid. I was 11 when this came out, so I doubt it holds up well to anyone who did not see it when it was released. But it is a nostalgia trip for me, and I can always sing "Funky Towel" and know my sister will join in. It is not a great film by any means, nor does it do anything new or ground breaking. But it's cute, funny, and a different spin on the genre. Romance, Conflict, Bugs, and Songs. If you have an open mind and are willing to try new things, check it out. Just don't be expecting over-whelmed with feelings, or under-whelmed due to the musical part, just be whelmed by a mediocre movie that I really enjoy. 3/5 Stars.

Movie of the Week: Tommy Boy

Oh my god, I fucking love this movie. One of my all time favorites. Chris Farley is great and David Spade is his perfect counter. This movie had everything I wanted from it, a road trip, slapstick, deer vs car destruction, Dan Aykroyd, and so much more. Comedy is a hard thing to sell. Either you get it or you hate it. You can't take someone's word for it when it's based on your own sense of humor. Unless that person gets you, I mean. If you are a fan of comedy, I recommend checking out this classic. If you are not a fan of comedy, I recommend removing the stick from your ass and growing funny bone.

Movie of the Week: The Jerk

This Jerk is one of those movies that I'd always heard about, but I'd never gotten around to watching myself.  Well the other night, I'm trying to find something to watch, and my pizza is getting cold.  I'm scrolling and scrolling through on On Demand menu well I come across The Jerk.  I see the tagline, "He was raised a poor black child..." and I'm like, "Sold!"  Just that idea alone gave me somewhat of an insight into what this movie is gonna be like, and I wanted to see where it goes.  So I did...it was ok.

The plot of this movie is very basic.  It's honestly a rags to riches story.  But instead of an endearing character that the audience can really identify with...he's just an idiot.  Now in a raucous comedy like this, it doesn't really matter that we identify with the character.  We just know he's an idiot, and we're gonna sit here for an hour and a half watching as much funny idiotic stuff that they can shove into our faces as possible.  It's just that kind of movie.  However I'd like to point out that it is possible to both identify with a character, and have the comedy being shoved in your face part as well.  Pretty much take any one of Jim Carrey's comedies (other than the Ace Ventura Movies, or Cable Guy...Ok, so I pretty much mean just Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, and Yes Man).  Those movies have a main character you care about, and the movie is also full of hilarious slapstick.  We can have both!  But I digress...

This movie just didn't knock it out of the part for me as far as what I'll call, "bringing the funny."  And it's not because of the movies age I don't think because there are plenty of movies that are older and hilarious.  I just don't think this movie could make up it's mind on what it wanted to be.  It's clearly a farce, but not to the extremes of say Airplane.  Then again, Airplane was technically a spoof of the movie Airport so I guess it's unfair to compare the two...along with all the Mel Brooks films I was just gonna mention, but now can't...damn.  I don't know really how to describe why I didn't think this movie worked as well as a full on spoof.  They left it somewhere in the middle between having a character you care about, and not giving a shit because everything is just ridiculous.  Maybe I just don't dig on Steve Martin's style...But then again, I loved Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which is a movie with characters you can identify with, but also has a scene where Steve Martin is wearing an eye patch and then wet's himself at the dinner table...So I dunno.  Maybe there just wasn't enough comedy to fill out the length of the movie, cause the trailer looks hilarious!  You've stumped me movie.  Good job.  2 stars. 

Wait!  Blazing Saddles!  Not a spoof...characters you root for and care about...total zany farce!  Boom!  Take that Jerk!

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Review Sorta Thing?

So I had no idea it was my turn to write a review today, and I really had no idea what the fuck I was going to talk about. So I decided to just review the last movie I watched (Well, I put this on last night when I went to sleep...but that counts, right?) It just so happens to be a movie I absolutely love. Obviously, that movie is Walk Hard. YAAAAAAAAAAY!

First of all, I have to say that I love John C. Reilly. I know he's one of those actors that people sometimes shit on for being the same character in all of his movies. First of all, that's not true. Second of all, he's amazing at what he does, so back the fuck off you jerks! I'd also like to say that this movie was what basically made me fall in love with Jenna Fischer. She looks gorgeous in this movie, and I just want to cry a little inside that I'll never have a chance in the world with her.

With all that being said, I suppose I should talk about this movie. Basically, the wrong kid dies, leading to Dewey trying to be the greatest thing to ever happen in life...because his brother he just cut in half with a machete had those dreams. Makes sense, right? This leads to a Walk The Line parody/life story thing happening. It's so fucking funny. Seriously. It's hilarious. THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING HILARIOUS. Did I mention that Jenna Fischer is really hot in this movie? I did? Well I just said it again.

That guy that sang Even Flow also has a cameo at the end of this movie, so that's cool. I don't really know what else to say about this movie. I can't even try to bring up all of the funny moments in this movie. I mean, he really wants to try some caaacaine...that was pretty great. How about that other part in this movie that was really funny?! That's like my favorite part!

To wrap this shit up, if you're dumb and haven't seen this yet, go watch it. If you have seen this movie and thought it sucked, I hate you. Seriously. I don't know why I know you. You're a terrible person who has no reason to live. End it. END IT RIGHT NOW!

Movie Of The Week: Spaceballs

Movie Of The Week is sometimes a tough choice. Not in that I can't think of a movie but that there are way to many to chose from. This week was no exception. So I decided on one I love from my childhood, back when spoof movies were respected, had real comedy in them, and not just pop culture references rushed out to make a quick buck. I'm talking Mel Brooks good. I've seen every one of his movies and I enjoyed them all. This week I was reminded of Spaceballs by a Facebook post from I Fucking Love Science. This picture below.

I immediately thought of the asshole scene. I Fucking love this movie. From beginning to end. It was a much needed spoof on the space movies. But it just wasn't a rip off of a current story, just mangled with currently in jokes. No, it had its own story and it made reference to other films in the genre. They weren't pot shots at the actors who played the roles or current celebrities in the news. They took the time to properly satire a film. Even made you care about there characters at the same time. It can't always be stupid fucking joke after stupid fucking joke. Take time to craft your jokes.

Spaceballs pokes mainly at Star Wars, a little bit of Alien and Star Trek thrown in. It is amazing. If you haven't seen, you must. It's a comedy you can't miss. 4 Stars!

Movie of the Week: The Watch

I'll be honest.  I'd never heard of this movie before.  I don't recall seeing any trailers or advertisements for it, and I'm really not even sure when it came out.  I'm sure a cursory look at IMDb would tell me, but who has that kind of time?  I do, but I don't really care.  So, with all that being said, when I stumbled upon this movie while scrolling through my OnDemand menu, I didn't really know what to expect.  I just saw the cast and figured, why not?  Could be funny.  I was mostly right.

So, I really feel like the filmmakers here didn't really care too much about what the story was gonna be.  I think they just wanted any vehicle to put these four guys in a room and have them riff about whatever for 90 minutes.  I guess the dart landed on aliens.  Anyway, the basic premise is as follows:  Ben Stiller is the manager at a Costco.  One night, one of his security guards is violently murder-splattered all over the store, and the cops don't seem to be doing much about it.  So, he decides to start a neighborhood watch to try and prevent stuff like this from happening.  He puts up flyers, and along come Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and that guy from The IT Crowd, who all join up as pretty much a means of hanging out, drinking, and tearin' shit up. Along the way, a pretty weakly thought out alien takeover plot starts to form.  Basically they figure out that the security guard was killed by aliens, and they took his skin and are hiding among us in plain sight...we better do something about this! Meh, whatever.  As I said before, I don't think they really cared what the story was about.

You can definitely pinpoint the scenes where Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill are just making shit up, as if they pretty much just hit record and said, "fuck it, say whatever you guys want!  I'm sure there will be 20 minutes here and there that will be funny!"  I notice this kind of thing now when it comes to these guys, especially with Jonah Hill.  I didn't mind it so much in movies like Knocked Up, but now he does it in pretty much everything he is in and it becomes obvious and borderline annoying.  How about we make a movie with a script?  I dunno, just a thought.

One other thing that bothered me is that early in the movie, before the security guard gets his skin ripped off, they make a point of showing you that he just got a brand new tattoo.  So, I immediately think that it will later be a decent reveal of someone being an alien...cause, ya know, the alien who's wearing the guys' skin will have that same tattoo, probably somewhere weird or upside down or whatever.  It was a clear set up with an easy payoff.  It never happened.  It's like they were gonna do it, and just forgot about it, or it got left out or something.  I guess it doesn't really matter, but it was something that stuck out to me as a misstep.

That really all I have to say about this movie.  It isn't much, but then I wasn't expecting much.  It made me laugh a few times.  There were some boobs in it at one point.  There was some silly Weekend at Bernie's-esque-alien-corpse-prop-comedy somewhere in there.  They accidentally blew up a cow, which was amusing...what else do you want from these guys really?  This was clearly just a nice paycheck for these guys, and they probably had a lot of fun making it and dickin' around with each other.  Good for them.  So if you like these actors and the line-o-rama kind of dialog they are known for, then by all means, watch the movie.  It will at least keep you occupied while you eat a couple of sandwiches and update your facebook every few minutes.

So I was recently watching an episode of Game of Thrones on my Kindle Fire through my HBO Go app and I thought; "What other stuff is on here?" A quick search through their movies and I found this film. I had never heard of it. I never saw a trailer, read a review, or even knew who was in it. I only knew the title and the description you see above. But I was sold because I love time travel stories. And this movie is funny. I think I enjoyed it more because I never heard of it and went in blind. Sure Anna Faris is in it, but I didn't know that until I saw the opening credits. That had me worried that it would be a shitty comedy, a bad parody, or worse; feature a lot of Anna Faris's bad acting. But she is barely in this movie and she doesn't do a bad job or make me want to stab myself in the eyes at all this time around. It's a British comedy, and co-presented by the BBC as well as HBO. It's a location movie where they stay in one place the whole time but done in a way that doesn't feel like it. As well as you can actually feel like these guys are friends and feel like friends I have. It's not over the top and it doesn't leave you feeling like you wasted your time. The effects aren't bad either.

The trailer below is only if you need further help pushing you to want to watch the movie. I recommend going into to it with out watch it, but to each's own. It's fun, different, a nice story, and very enjoyable. Not the best, but good. Check it out if you have HBO Go, or buy the dvd on Amazon. Eureka Series Review

Eureka is one of those show that I kept putting off. When it first came out I was intrigued but never watched it. I don't remember why I didn't watch it, but I was happy to see if on Netflix. All but the last season, so I had to torrent that one. Don't look at me like that! I'm paying for a streaming site and they don't have all the seasons of a show, what am I suppose to do? Wait? Pssh, whatever.

What is Eureka? It's a science fiction show that takes place in a town called Eureka, were the world's best scientist all live and work for Global Dynamics to develop tomorrows technology. And something is always going wrong. It's a near perfect blend of comedy, drama,and sci-fi. Your main character is the every-man Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson), a US Marshal appointed new town sheriff after an accident incapacitated the old one. Jack gives the show the dumbed down talk you some times need for the science/technobable they spue. I am a fan of science and learning things, so a lot of the time when they used their science speak, I actually understood it. Most of it deals in theory, but in the show they have put it into practice. I remember one episode with they are talking about an experiment where they could discover the Higgs Boson particle, and it's going blow up the town unless the contain it. In real life,the Higgs Boson was just discovered, about four years after that episode aired and all that happened was the news tried to explain what it was and the best they could do was dub it the "God Particle." But this is good, it means the show isn't completely full of shit. It is basic somewhere in reality.

The humor makes this show watchable when things get dumb in a few episodes. That only helps a little when the plot get so far fetched that it's tough to swallow, I am speaking mainly of the time travel episodes. You will get attached to the characters, like Henry, Fargo, Jo, Stark, and the new ones they add near the end. They will tug at the heart strings a bit. My favorite character for a while was Dr. Nathan Stark.We was short with people, a smart ass, he saved the day a lot and I loved it. He was later replaced as my favorite by Wil Wheaton's character Dr. Parrish, just a fucking dick. So Awesome. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston), on the other hand, was the weak link for me. We was the comic relief for the show that didn't really need it. A lot of stuff breaks or fucks up because of him. I remember the episode when my thoughts of him turned south. It was a clip show episode (Yes, they have a shitty flash back episode) but they do it in a different way, with using technology to record peoples memories for a time capsule. Then Fargo fucks with the code to change all the memories of him in the database so only good memories are left but it starts erasing peoples actual memories outside the machine. This is like season 3, and this dude does these horrible things, cost millions, if not, billions of dollars worth of damage. I would have fired his ass a long time ago, and thrown him in jail for terrorism of a small town. But no, he gets a slap on the wrist and an "Oh that Fargo! Wah Waaa, Derp" moment instead. To the credit of the writers though, they turned his character around after that and made me actually like him. He even dates Felicia Day's character. I wanna date Felicia Day.

There are a lot of great episodes with a bunch of mediocre ones thrown in so you don't get spoiled. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. And if you enjoy shows like Star Trek, Sherlock, and Big Bang Theory, you'll like this one. Also, unlike some other programs, it actually has an ending, so you aren't left feeling empty knowing it's cancelled going in. Fours stars, easy from me. Go watch it!

In my constant search to be entertained, it's rare that I am turn on to a new show by an animated gif. This was the animated gif that a saw.

I laughed pretty hard at that. Reading the comments imgur, I come to find out it was from Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. Once I heard the name of the show, I knew I had to check this out. So I did a quick google search and found it was on Netflix. I squealed with joy, as I often don't find what I want easily.
