Movie Of The Week: Joe's Apartment
"A nice guy has just moved to New York and discovers that he must share his run-down apartment with a couple thousand singing, dancing cockroaches." - IMDB.com
This is one of the reasons I started the Movie Of The Week segment. To remember films I loved that I've let slip from my mind. Joe's Apartment it definitely a love it or hate it film. Back when I used to watch MTV and all of it's crazy shows, and the one that started most of them, Liquid Television. Joe's Apartment is based on a short of the same name that used to air between shows. The short was cute but I never thought to much of it. Here, watch it:
Not much to it but that lead to MTV's first movie. It's a comedy, musical with singing cockroaches. I enjoyed the shit out of this movie as a kid. I was 11 when this came out, so I doubt it holds up well to anyone who did not see it when it was released. But it is a nostalgia trip for me, and I can always sing "Funky Towel" and know my sister will join in. It is not a great film by any means, nor does it do anything new or ground breaking. But it's cute, funny, and a different spin on the genre. Romance, Conflict, Bugs, and Songs. If you have an open mind and are willing to try new things, check it out. Just don't be expecting over-whelmed with feelings, or under-whelmed due to the musical part, just be whelmed by a mediocre movie that I really enjoy. 3/5 Stars.

Derek Review
Ricky Gervais is the simple man named Derek. Netflix "new" show. Never mind that it played on the BBC first, they picked up the rights to air it stateside first. So we got 7 episodes of this show at once, as usual with Netflix. You can burn through the half hour long episodes real quick if you can sit through it that long. I made 5 before I had to stop.
Derek is about Derek Noakes, a nursing home helper and is a bit slow in the head. The show is a mockumentry style Gervais made famous with The Office. I was skeptical of how funny or how much I'd enjoy a show making fun of a mentally challenged person. But I gave it a shot. The first episode was a bit tough to get through, because I felt they were making fun of the mentally handicapped but that soon faded. While being funny, it was kind-hearted and had some genuinely sad moments, none at the expense of Derek's unnamed disability.
Defiantly not a pretty people show.
I am very much over the mochumentry style tv shows. I feel they have been over done and are generally not funny to me. Mainly because Reality TV shows are the same thing, staged/written events filmed with shaky cams and fake people talking at you. That is not to say I haven't enjoyed an episode or three of any Reality TV or mochumentry style show. I just prefer single camera narratives, shows that are like movies with big stories to tell. Derek has the over arching problem of not going anywhere fast. But is that a problem of the style or that it's a comedy? Hard to say. They do throw in a story of they have to come up with their own money to fund the nursing home but they gloss over if and never explain things.
Interesting product placement randomly thrown in.
The acting in this is generic British stand-in characters that can't exist in the real world. I have a hard time believing any of these people, aside from Derek, are real. Ricky Gervais does an outstanding job but I have yet to see why this show is around. Gervais based Derek on a character he used to do in his stand up. And the others are cardboard cutouts for him in interact with. It's been a week since I've seen it and I can't remember anyone's name.
"You can't remember my name? You dick."
Over all, I did enjoy the show. It was fun and touching all while been completely pointless. But when it comes down to it, isn't every show in some way pointless? So would I recommend it? Yes. You'll get attached to the Derek character very fast, rooting for him. You'll burn through this very fast, 30 minutes or so doesn't fill to much time. So pace yourself, and enjoy what little you are given. It's now on Netflix, give it go. 3 out of 5.

Olympus Has Fallen Review
"Disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers." - imdb.com
The prequel to White House Down. Lawls. Ok, not an original joke, everyone has made that comparison but I honestly had them confused. I seriously thought it was going to be Channing Tatum guarding Morgan Freeman as president. When it began with Gerard Butler hanging out with Aaron Eckhart and Ashley Judd, I was confused for a second. And Morgan Freeman doesn't show up til a quarter of the way in.
The movie opens with the fall of Gerard's character as he fails to save the first lady in a car accident. I thought it was going to be something more, like it was caused by something but I was wrong. Now he's a desk jockey, pushing pencils for some chick. And bam, the North Koreans attack. And Gerard runs in to save the day. Saving a little boy, then the president, and over all, the world from another war. Loads of bad guys and Secret Service guys die in the process.
"Can you read this list of Chuck Norris facts, Mr. Freeman?"
There is not a whole lot to say about this movie. Is it Die Hard in the White House. It's a little smarter than your average action flick but it goes back to its rated R roots. Showing lots of blood, a swearing up the wazoo. It has a few twists in it, and some conflicts end a tad different than you except. The acting is sub-par, no one really stands out or does anything new. Loud action, quite talking. I was a little annoyed that I had to keep adjusting the volume for deafening action scenes to whispers during the dialog parts. Turning on the captions because I can't hear the actor shouldn't happen. Over all I enjoyed it, it's worth a rental. You know what you are getting with this kind of movie and you shouldn't expect much more. Check it out.

Movie of the Week: Traces of a Dragon: Jackie Chan & His Lost Family
So something I don't normally talk about, my love for kung fu movies. I get great enjoyment out of them, and there are quite a few action stars that I watch. Jackie Chan is one of the first for me. I'd seen his movies before, but it wasn't until I saw Rumble In The Bronx on the big screen that I really came to under just how awesome Jackie Chan was. And that wasn't his best work, I came to find that later. My friend Eric and I would watch these great kung fu movies and it was the best of times.
Now I say this to point out my own naivete when it can to Asian culture and lack of knowledge in the subject of a kung fu movie. I've been watching collections of great stars, trying to enjoy them with subtitles and not badly dubbed. Jackie Chan's weren't as bad because he spoke English and dubbed most of his works. Now I've come accustom to both formats and don't mind either. Years ago, I would have hated this documentary.
Ugh, I have to read!?
So I saw this documentary was added to Netflix and saw Jackie Chan's name. I read the info about was intrigued. It wasn't about Jackie's rise or his childhood per se. It was about him finally learning about his parents past and that he had four siblings he didn't know; as well as a different sir name. It's an emotional ride as you learn the super rough time his dad had growing up and trying to make it in war torn China. You learn with Jackie about his dad's past, and his brothers from another mother. Then you hear the tale of his mother who had it equally tough and find out about Jackie's two sisters from another father. Both stories are heart wrenching, and tragic tales of just how hard it was growing up, raising a family, and the painful choices one makes for family in those times.
Jackie's Dad is a badass.
Not at all what I was excepting from this documentary, but it was amazing. I love learning about the past history of other countries. My ignorance to what the rest of the world has or is going through gets cleared up a little more with just taking the time to listen and understand why things happen. I really recommend this, you should check it out. 3 out of 5.

Monday Review: Pitch Perfect
"Beca, a freshmen at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school's all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition." - IMDb
So, I'm trying something a little different this time, and I'm actually writing this review while the movie in question is literally on, and I've had a few drinks, and I've been cajoled into writing a review. (See what I did there? What a fucking weird, yet oddly precise word choice there IMDb) ... So anyway, oddly enough, the reason the movie is on is because I'm kind of obsessed with this movie. But before you call me gay or lame or whatever, allow me to defend it for a second or two...
I've always liked music and musicals and stuff like that. Even music that is probably lame, or so you say...whoever you are! But anyway, this movie is kind of like Glee, but if it were totally not pretentious or trying to relay a message or any of that nonsense. This is basically a college comedy with less nudity (sadly none) but plenty of attractive ladies to look at, more clever jokes, and a bunch of nifty popular/classic music mash-ups...it's just really solidly put together and I try to get people to watch it with me, and I'm often met with, "whatever fag, make me a sandwich!" Ok that has never happened...but when people roll their eyes at the suggestion, it feels the same...*sniffle*
All in all, this movie does very little to take itself seriously, which more than anything else, draws me to it. I think the movie is really funny. It also takes a different path as far as the plot goes than most movies do, but it's just formulaic enough to keep you interested. It's kinda like a refreshing take on an old story, with a lot of singing in it, but not Disney/Highschool the Musical/Glee type bullshit.
Really though, this movie is like a choir kid's wet dream, so, you might not actually like it...so bite me. I'm gonna have another drink and continue watching some hot funny bitches sing songs I know.

Movie of the Week: Sharknado
This is a perfect storm of awesome sauce. I wanted ridiculous, crazy, stupid, fun, and that is what I got. I laughed so hard at this movie. Schlocky CGI, mixed with bad stock footage, shaky cam during a stationary car scene, great terrible acting, and insane events. We are talking about a Waterspout Tornado picking up sharks, launching them at people, and eventually flying a helicopter to fight them. Plus Tara Reid doing something that seems like acting! There are parts where you see deep under water shots of sharks that are suppose to be in the flooded streets of California. Or shooting a flying shark in the head to make him stop flying. The Hollywood sign even kills a guy. What's even better is that the main people in this are the only people effected by this, no one else seems to notice anything is even happening. This one is easy, you grab some drinks, gather your friends, and prepare for the worst. You will not regret it. Syfy channel has done it again with an amazing horrible b movie that is so bad, it's good.

Movie of the Week: The Notebook
"A poor and passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman and givers her a sense of freedom. They soon are separated by their social differences." IMDb
In my opinion there are two ways to enjoy this movie. I will start with the more traditional way.
Number 1: This way assumes that you are a typical, healthy minded person who can appreciate the heart behind this story. It is kind of a classic tale that we've heard before. Two young people from different social classes fall in love, but are torn apart because of circumstance and societal pressures. They grow up to be different people, but in the end find each other again and realize that love concurs all. It's a bit like Titanic without that whole disaster thing, or better yet, Aladdin without a genie are anything. This movie is slightly different because the story is sort of, in a way, told twice because it's being told in flashbacks. The present is an old man reading the flashback story to an old woman with dementia. We find out along the way that the old man and woman are actually the two characters in the flashbacks. He reads her the same story every day in hopes that, just like in the flashback story, the circumstances will be mended and she will come back to him once again. In the end, she does remember who he is and how much they love each other and they end up passing away in each others arms. Awwww, how touching.
Number 2: In order to enjoy the movie in this way, a couple of other things might have to be in place, or rather out of place in your own life. I learned to enjoy The Notebook in this fashion in college. Let me set the stage for you. I had been going through what we'll call relationship issues, and I had been doing a fair bit of drinking. Now, my college had a movie channel that would replay the same line-up of movies every day at the same time of day for a month. At this particular time, the network happened to be playing The Notebook every day at around 2 pm, which would be right around the time I would wake up from the bender I had been on the night before. For lack of anything better or more constructive to do, I would put on this movie and enjoy it very much. Here is why. When viewed from a bitter, angry, dead inside type state of being, the movie can be summed up rather quickly: Two attractive people who are supposed to be in love with each other spend most of their time on screen arguing, fighting, in misery, confused, or in pain. Then at the end, they fucking die. Good!
Either way, solid 3 stars.

The Goodwin Games Premiere Review
I saw a trailer for this a while ago and thought it looked cute. Yep, cute. And then this came out with different actors in it. Right off the bat, seeing T.J. Miller in this now, I knew I had to support it. I love that guy. Denver, YEAAAAH! Listen to "Doug Loves Movies," you'll get it. As well as it comes from the creators of How I Met Your Mother, and with that show ending soon they had to start something new. But will it be any good?
The story so far is, a father passes away and reunited his three children. Henry, Chloe, and Jimmy. They have become estranged over the years and the father wanted to change his children to be better people. So before he kicked the bucket, he made a crazy as shit will. Full of tapes, games, and puzzles that the three siblings must do in order to earn the $23 million inheritance. He wants them to play a game of Trivial Pursuit, but with custom cards and questions about the family. This is where they introduce the 4th player, someone they don't know who could also win all of the money. For a premiere, I enjoyed it. It kept me engaged and entertained. Some jokes fell flat and others were spot on. I enjoyed all the performances. I will be tuning in for the next one.
but...
I do not see this lasting. Number one, it is on Fox, nothing lasts long there. Good or bad. It's like my last few jobs, high turnover rate and being run by people so far out of touch with society that they're confused by logic and things that are different. Number two, the story. I felt that the show could have been resolved in the first episode. I believe this should have been a movie. Just a one shot and done. I don't see much else they can do or add to keep it fresh for long. Number three is the amount of episodes ordered. Fox gave this a half season order, only 7 instead of the usual 13. That is a rocky start out of the gate. So my prediction is to get in while you can before this is crushed by the Fox Machine. Get your enjoyment while you can.

Movie of the Week: Superman Unbound
It's a fact that I like cartoons. Animated features are always cool to check out, and Netflix has a bunch so you can always go there. But over the past few years, DC Comics and Warner Brothers have been putting out some great straight to dvd movies. They offer more than the live action market which is just Batman, Green Lantern, and soon the new Superman movie. Most of these animated movies are retellings of popular trades released some time ago. Like the Batman: Year One series or several other Superman stories.
What I like about these is that you can just jump right in. No bullshit explaining who Superman is or what he can do. They expect you to know that by now, and no, not every straight to dvd movie is a sequel to the last. So you don't have to have seen that one. They are much like an animated tv show, only in a 90 minute chunk.
Superman Unbound is based on the Superman: Brainiac story. It brings in Supergirl, the city of Kandor, and of course the villain Brainiac. While the trailer below is a bit silly, what with the "Welcome to Erf" line, it is an over all enjoyable experience. So if you enjoy DC Comics, or their movies, or even watched their cartoons as a kid, you'll like Superman Unbound! Go rent it, or wait for it to eventually come on Netflix.
