The Time Machine (2002) is a modern remake of The Time Machine (1960) which was a film adaptation of an H.G. Wells novel published in 1894. Oddly enough, the novel was titled The Time Machine. You'll never guess what it's about...
This movie is one of those remakes that I really and truly like apart from the original because they are very different movies with different stories and story telling styles. The 1960 film was very much like the novel, both in story and voice. The main character was H. George Wells (that name sounds familiar for some reason) He has invented a time machine because he could and wants to go do things and see stuff...ya know, time travel-y stuff. He doesn't really have a reason for building his machine other than to say, "See!? Told ya I could!" The entire story is told in the form of a flashback which he is describing to his friends who stand around, sip brandy, and probably remember how cool it was to own people. I won't spoil if for you, but it's pretty good. Now, in the remake, our main character is a man named Alexander Hartdegen. He is kind of an absent minded professor type with a love for math, pocket watches, and a woman named Emma. On the very same night he proposes to her, she is murdered for her engagement ring. Alex doesn't take this well and spends the next four years inventing time travel in order to prevent Emma's death. Unfortunately, because temporal causality is a bitch, nothing he does can prevent her death. So, instead of dwelling on the past, he sets out to find answers in the future, so he can dwell on the past...in the future. The rest of the movie ensues.
The two movies do share some common elements of the original story such as the end of modern civilization caused by stupid humans, evolved races of future people like the Eloi and the Morlocks...hell, there's even a time machine! (fucking duh) There are even a couple of nods to the fans of the original movie such as the scene with the clothes changing on the mannequins outside his workshop, and the crystal nob on the time machine control handle. However that's pretty much where the similarities with the original story end. This movie has a completely original story which I very much enjoy, even with the colossal plot holes at the end. Watch the movie and see what I'm talking about why don't ya?!
I chose not to put in the IMDB info for this movie because if you haven't seen this movie, I don't want to give too much away. With that being said, here are some of my thoughts on this movie. It's kind of sad to think that the best Horror films coming out these days are all Comedies. Including The Cabin in the Woods and of course this movie. There are not really any movies that are both good and have those "Wow, that freaked the shit out of me" moments. With that being said, I do REALLY enjoy a great, funny Horror movie.
This is absolutely one of those types of movies. I didn't really know what this movie was about the first time I saw it, but within the first 5 minutes I knew what it was going to be like, and I was in love. It's just so damn funny, enjoyable, has some heart warming moments, and a really hot chick! I've now seen this movie 3 times, and have enjoyed it every time.
Like I mentioned earlier, it sucks that there really aren't many good, scary, well made horror films. But if movies like this is what we can expect when it comes to the more comedic type of horror film, I'm really looking forward to it. I didn't want to give too much away, because the less you know before seeing this movie, the better. It is on the Netflix Instant Queue, so give it a look.
This week we review the Video Game Film, Silent Hill: Revelation. A sequel to the 2006 movie, but this one is based off of the 3rd game and has little ties to the first one in ways of story. IMDB's description says "When her father disappears, Heather Mason is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood." This episode is pretty funny, so give it a listen.
Let me start with a story. For those of you who don't know, I'm a huge Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I fell in love with the character when my dad traded our Nintendo and games in and got the Sega Genesis with two games to start; Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse and the original Sonic The Hedgehog. Not long after that, I got Sonic 2, Sonic 3(This as a Link To A Video Of Me Playing Sonic 3!), Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bead Machine, Sonic Spinball, Sonic and Knuckles and so on. I bought the comics and stayed up late to watch the sneak peak of the cartoon on TGIF on ABC introduced by Jaleel White (at the time I didn't make the connection that it was introduced by the guy who voiced the cartoon Sonic). I even drew pictures on Sonic and my teacher bought me stickers cuz he was on them. I was hooked, and had everything Sonic I could. And one day, at the mall with my mom, we were at the games store Babbage's and there it was. The Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie on VHS. It was $10. I but no matter how much I begged, my mom wouldn't get it for me. I was told "next time." But there was no next time. It was the last one when I was at that store the last time, and when we went back it was gone. We checked the Suncoast Videos, not there. Blockbuster video to rent it, not there. I always kept an eye out for it but I never did find it.
Years went by, the internet came into houses. And I found that I could buy it! From $18 on dvd to over $100 still sealed VHS copies. Being that I'm currently unemployed, I can't afford to buy it but I found it entirely online on youtube! Awesome. I linked it below so you can watch it too.
This is amazing. As a huge fan of Sonic, I was so excited to see that it was the same style of art from the Sonic CD anime intro and outro videos. Localisation to US edited the VHS version of the film, but the DVD and version below are unedited. Including Sonic getting hit in the balls, Tails grabbing some tits, and Sonic giving Metal Robotnik the finger. If you enjoy anime and old school OVA style stuff, you'll like this. It's over the top, silly, funny, dumb, great action, and just my childhood wrapped up into a blue ball of "Fuck Yeah."
